Remember that day? |
In ten years from now, today is the day that you remember as 'that' day. Make it worth remembering then. Be so present to everything today that you remember every moment for eternity. And when you are 90 and need a walking stick and dentures, let this day be the one that walks you down a beautiful memory lane and brings about an endearing toothless smile. |
In ten years from now, today will be the 'good old days'. When you could wake up with no aches, no pains, when your fingers could hold your favourite Waterman as it rewrote your life in your morning journal. Today will be the 'good old days' when you were not an empty nester, when you woke up to the smell of coffee brewing in the kitchen and the smell of ghee dabbed aloo parathas wafting in the morning air. Bring your presence to this moment.
Tith Nan Han said, love is simply being present. So be present to everything today. Be as present to the coffee as to a business proposal which you know is not your cup of tea. Be as present to the Eggs Benedict as you are to a co-worker who needs some egging on. Be as present to kneading the dough as you are to those who need you. Be as present to the smell as you are to an itch on your nose.
Because the perfect life does not lie in ten years from now. It does not lie in the designations you would have or the accolades around your neck or the feathers in your cap. The perfect life is not in the foods you will eat, the cars that you will drive, the holidays you will take, the parties you will attend, the money you will make, the relationships you will have. The days you are waiting for will be the good old days only after twenty years, maybe. But then, at that time you, you will still not be enjoying the gold old days. You will be busy creating more good old days of the future. That's how anxiety is born.
The good old day is now, today, at this moment. Because when we are not present to the 'good new today', we are not pouring our love into today. And when today becomes bereft of love, it takes the form of fear, a few years from now.
Create the good old days today. And live them today itself. Because when you are present to today, it becomes a present to you.

It's always the fictitious you that gets hurt. |
The true you is safe, whole, complete, unbroken, unshattered, unscathed, undamaged, unhurt. Resting in the divine glow knowing that it is omnipresent, all pervading, and immortal.
It's the fictitious you that feels the hurt though. The you that feels that the world owes it an apology is the one that gets hurt. The you that has been created by the expectations of the world and expectations you have from the world. The you that has become a fictitious character in the world playing the storylines penned by many a guilt, shame, anger and regret that gets hurt when your story is not validated by someone else.
The you that has created the image of a know-it-all gets hurt when you are not the first choice for someone who wants to know it all. The you who has created the image of a loving mother who has put her life on hold to bring up her children and is caught in this virtue trap is the one who gets hurt when she does not get the appreciation she believes she deserves. The you who has created an image of a generous employer is the one who gets hurt when people leave for greener pastures, and you feel that they are the ones giving you the boot. The you who has created the image of a kind and compassionate person is the one who gets hurt when someone calls you everything that you believe you are not. The you who has created an image of a relentless go-getter is the one who gets hurt when one day you fail miserably, and you get more brickbats than bouquets. The you who has created an image of a star performer is the one who gets hurt when someone else gets the accolades and not you.
And why do we create this image? Because this image is the only one that keeps us loved and protected in this ruthless world. Because this image is the only thing, we hold strong and go through our entire lives to protect. To protect this self-image is what we give Ego a monthly retainer for. And Ego goes all out to keep its job and do its work taking full ownership and responsibility.
What if one day you decide to drop this image. If the image goes, Ego goes jobless and perishes. And when the image goes, the true, divine self reemerges.
