Boredom is ego throwing a tantrum. |
A little boredom is good. It helps build creative muscle. But what is it that lies deep beneath boredom? A lot of fear and a load of child like sulking by the ego. |
You are in the creative flow when you are creating from the soul, but one premature look at the end result, and the micro-judgement of ego pulls up an embankment on the flow.
Boredom is the weapon we use to bail out. Boredom is the symptom. The excessive ego or fear of failure or judgment is the cause.
This is not good. What was I thinking? Why am I not being celebrated? Why do I have to do all the writing? This is not worthy of a book. Who will buy this? What will people think of my writing skills when they read this. Will my ex read this? What will make him like it? What if the critics diss it?
It's just the ego seeking attention and validation and throwing a tantrum.
When you create from the soul, you explore all the worlds, the familiar and the unfamiliar. Because you seek unlimited wonder. When you create from the ego, you explore the competition, just trying to better something, seek admiration and reward. And reward is always limited. The soul finds everything fascinating. The ego wants only to create the interesting. And when interesting here becomes subjective and short-lived, boredom sets in. And you move from one poem to another, one art piece to the next one, unable to find your anchor.
Between showing up and surender, lies flow. Flow is where one moment of presence meets the next with no gaps, where you are in a constant state of surrender, when you realise that you are just the vessel and you have been chosen to write a poem, and it's not in your control. That you do not control the creative process as well, for when you try to, the conniving ego shows up its ugly side. Little fairies and angels hold your pen and the brush and we are to surrender the process to them. And finally, you don't even control what happens after the creation is complete. You have no control over who will see your art, who will shift with your poem, who will find solace in your story.
Show up and surrender the outcome to the universe. Allow the ego no space for tantrums.

You have an entire lifetime to worry about. Except this moment. |
You have an entire day to be worried about your relationships, finances, goals. You have your entire life to feel the urgency of what needs to be done - the bills that need to be paid, the numbers that have to be achieved, the competition that needs to be slammed, the kids and their soccer practice, the meals that have to be prepared for dinner, the dresses that need ironing for the week ahead.
But you also have this moment to spend with the most beautiful human being you know - you. You have this moment to feel like the queen, you have this moment to become no one but you, you have this moment to sit with yourself.
When the biggest war on the planet was about to begin, when it was really a matter of life and death, when it was about to come down to one fatal blow that could change and end everything, when everything life was meant to be could become doomsday in seconds, even in that one tight spot, Arjuna made the decision to sit with himself, access the divinity within and have a dialogue with it. And that's when the Lord sang the song.
At that moment everything else was put on hold - all the unpaid bills, all the grudges and grievances, all expectations and desires, all the Excel sheets of investments and life insurance, all the project plans, all the pains and aches, all the profits and losses.
Find this moment to sit with yourself to experience what you experience. In silence, the emotions speak and tell stories of your past whispering into your depths the advice of your ancestors. Take the time to notice the emotion, acknowledge it, label it, listen to the message it has for you, thank it and then feel free to consciously change in that moment. We only tend to feel what we want to feel and we can choose to smile and feel happy right now.
When you focus on your breath, the breathtaking anecdotes of your experiences play behind your closed eyelids. Notice those thoughts and they immediately evaporate but don't judge them for judgment is just another thought.
You have an entire lifetime to worry. But can you choose this moment to be happy. Even if it's temporary. And as this moment disappears, make the next one happy. And then the one after.
