Spirituality is a call to be human again, not be God.

  mark

You have dropped your ego. Now see, you are better than others.

You have read all the scriptures so you are wiser than them.

You have been on a spiritual path for two decades, so obviously you know more than someone who just started off.

You have a special relationship with God and it’s far thicker than someone else’s.

God talks to you, so you are special.

You are here to save people. You are the spirituality expert in people’s lives.

You have done all the inner work there has to be done.

You got my spirituality as a download in your sleep.

You are above all this drama.

Welcome to spiritual ego. The more sinister version of the ego that swaps flowy dresses for designer labels. While a spiritual life calls on you to drop your labels and identities, ‘being spiritual’ itself becomes a label then. When one is called upon to be desireless, the desire to become desireless is another vicious cycle. When you are called to drop your ego, I am egoless is a beautiful narrative that the ego starts nurturing to strengthen your identity.

The ego won't die. It’ll just wear a new mask.

Spirituality becomes dangerous when it stops being beingness and becomes performative, still a show of one-upmanship but under the garb of a spiritual life.

You meditate daily, but judge others for sleeping in. You quote the Bhagavad Gita but you can’t sit through a conversation without wanting to own it. You quote Rumi but you can’t pick up the phone to forgive your sister. You talk to people about abundance but have a strong money wound and always operate from lack. You teach people to surrender but want to control the outcome of every relationship and conversation. You shame others for their ‘lower frequency’ while denying the rage that still lives in your body. You feel you are more divine because you chant mantras and when someone dances at a club, you get triggered.

Spirituality is not a label, an identity or an opinion. In Sanskrit, spirituality is called adhyatama which means to study oneself, to study one’s soul and spirit. It’s not a shortcut, not a formula, not a mantra, not a meditation. It’s not a course or a retreat.

  It’s a pilgrimage.

It’s a return to love, a return to experiencing the divinity within and allowing for the world to feel that divinity without you telling them, as you feel their Godliness without wanting or expecting them to change.

The real work is not being more “spiritual” but being more human. It’s not rising above others, it’s sitting beside them. It’s not about never getting angry, it’s about staying aware while you’re losing it. It’s not about being right, it’s about being free. True spiritual maturity lies not in how much you’ve transcended, but in how deeply you’ve integrated your shadow and walked towards wholeness accepting yourself fully. You are not spiritual because you feel above it all. You are spiritual because you allow yourself to feel it all - the mess,
mud, magic, alike.

Spirituality is a call to be human again, not be God.

  Joy thrives on two things.
Giving and forgiving.

When you are out to bring joy, love and miracles into your life and create a change in your life and in the universe, the first thing life calls on you to do is invoke the giver in you. Second, to give yourself the joy, love and miracles for only once your cup is getting filled will you be able to pour them into the world.

It then demands you to move from self to service. To put yourself into the service of the universe and its beings. It asks of you to be a go-giver than a go-getter, to come from a space of abundance, not scarcity. It calls on you to you to give your undivided attention to your dreams, your unrelenting commitment to your gifts being used in the universe and not hoarded in forgotten cupboards, your non-negotiable devotion to showing up to honour your talents and your purpose, your selfless generosity and your magnanimous love.

Giving is asking the universe what you can do for it and how you can serve it instead of asking the universe what it can do for you. It's not about turning prayer into a shopping list but a gratefulness inventory. It inspires you to move from a get to a give state of being. We all may have a unique purpose on this planet but a there's one purpose that's common to all of us in whatever we do. To be a giver of love and spread it in abundance. Through our beingness, work, actions and interactions.

But on the journey of deep, meaningful living, there can be no authentic giving
without forgiving.

Forgive all those who didn't give you a chance. Everyone who told you that you were no good. Those who rejected you and your ideas. Forgive those who hurt you. Forgive them. Ask for forgiveness from those whom you have wronged, knowingly or unknowingly. And most importantly, forgive yourself for not allowing yourself to live a fulfilling, joyful and abundant life. Forgive yourself for your past mistakes and failures. Forgive yourself for all the shame, wrongdoings and the guilt.

Forgiveness sets you free to give yourself freely to the universe. When you are free, you are fearless. And when you are fearless, you give fearlessly. Just forgive. And then give it whatever you have.

For giving, you have to be forgiving.
