Right now, your next move is all that matters. |
But make that move you must. You may be terrible at that move. It may demand that you invoke every angel, fairy, higher self and God to make this move and chances are you may still fail. The outcome of your next move does not determine the outcome of all your life's successes. One bad move does not define every failure and one good move does not give you the assurance of magic. |
That's the beauty of making moves. You get to suck at what you do. You get to go at your pace, the world has no expectations from you, and you get to make a disaster of it. This is liberating, not stifling.
Your first draft may be your worst. Your first audition may make you cringe and go back to bed. Your voice may shake on the first song you record. Your knees may become jelly on the first spoken mic you participate in. Butterflies may make a home in your stomach during the first dance for an audience. You may not be able to lift even the lightest weight at the gym.
You see your detractors and the naysayers of yourself worth making a mockery of your efforts. But here's what happens.
Next day, you show up again. But your detractors do not, for they have found new scapegoats to project their traumas on. And then you show up again. You write the second draft, you record one more podcast, you enter one more spoken mic, you dance once again, you lift a heavier weight. And then you show up for the third, fourth, fifth, sixth... hundredth time.
You now have the experience and learnings of a hundred showups. Those who judge you have moved on and from here you will keep moving ahead.
Keep showing up for yourself. Your baby steps may be shaky but as you keep moving, they will become sure and steady.
Bit by bit you become better. The teeny-weeny increments will push you for one more show up. Be grateful to take that step. Mess up the canvas, bust the podcast, screw up the project, be willing to be a beginner and a bad one at that. The mess you make is not important but what is important is the courage that you made it. And from here on, make your next move however imperfect, shaky and unconfident it may be.
Your next move matters. Intend to make it matter.

Of maximalism and miraclism. |

There is an old proverb that says that each person comes to life only when they have something to give to the world. When the path that people are walking on has caved in and you can fill the gaps only with your special brand of love. When the world lacks hope and you stitch together the fabric of their life with stories of resilience told with love. When pain has attached itself to the lives of others and your compassion helps them let go. When the life people had seen for themselves has hit a dead end and your empathy becomes the spade that clears the debris on their path to fulfilment.
What is this life called? Is it a life of devotion to selfless service or is it a life of maximalism? Of living and giving to the fullest. Or daring life to play with you and you know that it's just that, play, and not something you need to take seriously. Maximalism is a life where you allow yourself to be at your fullest with love, acceptance, surrender, feeling of abundance, generosity and presence. It's a life when you wake up to your purpose and everything else that does not align to it just falls off like leaves in autumn. It's a life when you accept nothing small, and you give nothing small but your whole beingness. It is a life that wherever you stand, you become the soul of the place.
Or is a life of miraclism? Of knowing that this very moment is a miracle and so is the next. That miracles are the storyline of the universe and reality is the plot twist. Because when you choose to show up for yourself, all event planners in the heavens come together to make every moment seem like a fairy tale but is so subtle that you would need a deeper awareness to pick up the signs. When you know that a thunderclap in the heavens is as big a miracle as counting a grain of rice and giving it your full attention.

It’s a life knowing that you are air, and you can observe, breathe, focus, decide. Knowing that you are fire, and you can burn, tame, adapt and ignite. Knowing that you are earth, and you can ground, give, build and heal. Knowing that you are water, and you can cry, cleanse, flow and let go. And that you are spirit, and you can connect, listen, know and be still.
