The many simple, sacred ways to making every moment a devotion.

  mark

The form is beautiful and so is the formless. But understandably, for most of us,
the formless is hard.

So when someone says, worship the formless, the mind freezes. How do you love what you cannot picture? How do you surrender to what you cannot hold? How do you speak to silence? How do you offer everything to nothing?

And yet, there are ways. Simple, sacred ways where every moment is a devotion.

To start with, ritualize your life.

Turn the simple act of waking up in the morning into a sacred ritual - a gratitude prayer, two minutes of anulom vilom, and a flying kiss to yourself in the bathroom mirror. Make your ritual of morning journaling sacred. Switch on the light, sit on the couch with your feet tucked under the throw, sharpen your pencil, open the journal, run your hand over the blank page, feel the texture, put pencil to paper. Make the simple process of writing so scared with little rituals that it becomes your offering to the divine.

Turn making your cup of tea into a sacred art form. Notice the bubbles as the water boils, take in the smell as the pestle massages the ginger in the mortar into submission and allows it to live its purpose. Be present to the tea leaves in the pot as you stir every ounce of flavour out of it. As the cup touches your lips, make it a beautiful ritual to thank the leaf, the farmer, the factory worker, the lorry driver, the cloud of rain - everyone and everything that has made the sip a reality.

Make watching the sunrise instead of a reel a ritual. Make tending to the plants in the balcony a ritual. Make doing the dishes a ritual. Make driving to work a ritual. Make listening to the podcast in the car a ritual. Make greeting your colleagues a ritual. Make making a deck a ritual. Make your ideas a ritual. Make taking your ideas to the world a ritual. Break down one ritual into many small ones - call them ritualings.

To worship the formless, begin not by rejecting form, but by seeing God in everything. From dewdrops to butterflies, coffee beans to pets, from red apples to orange sunrises.

Sit in silence for a few moments each day without asking for a face to appear. Let the breath itself become the temple bell. Look at the sky for a while. The open, vast, ungraspable sky. Let that teach you something about the divine.

Listen to the gap between two sounds, the stillness between two thoughts, the quiet after a prayer, the pause before a response. The sacred is often hiding there.

When you drink water, feel gratitude without needing to address a deity by name.
Feel gratitude for one thing this morning and there, you just got the formless divine’s undivided attention.

When you breathe deeply, remember that life is moving through you without your intervention. When you sit in nature, let yourself feel held by something you cannot define. When you create, notice how something larger than you moves through you and how you just become the medium for the doemess to create form through you.

Practise seeing the divine not as an object outside you, but as awareness itself. The one who notices. The witness. The silent presence in which all thoughts, emotions, sensations, and stories come and go. That, too, is worship.

Stop waiting to feel something dramatic. Don't think that a spiritual experience is a loud thunderclap in the heavens where you will have an out of body experience you can't explain. Imagine this moment as a miracle and you have then touched divinity.

Become an embodiment of love. Allow love to be the answer to all questions. Allow love to be the only way you show up in the world - in boardrooms, living rooms, on roads, in forests, at home and even when you are not feeling at home.

The formless is not somewhere else. It is not hiding only in caves, scriptures and mystical states. It is here. In the awareness reading these words. In the breath moving through your body. In the space in which your whole life is appearing.

Imagine this beautiful life as God itself. And here you have a choice. To be life-fearing
or life-loving.

  Rab Raakha.
A blessing wrapped in two words.

  mark

There is a beautiful phrase in Punjabi called Rab Raakha - a small phrase that holds an entire ocean inside with.

Rab Raakha. May God protect you.

It is not merely said as a goodbye or a polite sign-off but as a blessing, like a warm hug around someone, a blanket around their shoulders, an armour around their being as they step back into the world.

To say Rab Raakha to someone is blessings them that may God keep them held and protected. May grace go where you cannot, may love guard them where your hands cannot, may the road be kinder to them than how your worries imagine, may unseen forces walk beside them, may what is meant for them find them, may they be protected from what they can see and what he cannot, may trees nourish and protect them, may streams refresh them, may life show the way, the butterflies lead the caravan, may seagulls cheer them on, may the breeze hold them before becoming their tailwind.

When you wish Rab Raakha to someone, there is a quiet admission that you cannot
control their life, cannot stand between them and their heartbreaks, cannot clear every obstacle from their path, cannot rewrite their story, silence their pain or fight their demons. But you can bless them, love them and hand them over to a power far more powerful than your helplessness.

To say Rab Raakha is to remember that we are never only in human care we are in universe care. It may feel invisible but it comes as grace through strangers in metros who give you their seat, though detours that seem like delays but land you in the right place at the right time, through Instagram posts that you needed to see, through books that called out to you, through a thousand synchronicities that you can't even remember.

You are not alone. Someone greater is watching, holding, guarding, guiding. Sometimes with a visible hand, sometimes with an invisible one.

Rab Raakha is not just something we say to others, it is something we whisper to ourselves too, on fearful nights, uncertain mornings, before hard conversations, before long journeys, before letting go, before sleep. Rab Raakha. May God protect me. May I remember
that I am held.

Rab Raakha. May God protect you.
