  God gives free advice.
Then, free will.

Thus I have shared with you the deepest of wisdom. Reflect upon it completely, and then do as you wish. ~ Bhagavad Gita 18.63

Most teachings in the world come as commandments. But here’s the most beautiful thing about the Bhagavad Gita. It ends with free will.

After eighteen chapters, almost 700 verses, countless questions, profound teachings on karma, devotion, consciousness, suffering, duty, and even revealing his cosmic form, Krishna does not conclude by saying, “now obey me.” He does not ask for blind allegiance to all that he has said. He does not command surrender through fear. He simply places responsibility into our hands and says, ‘reflect upon all that I have shared, and then do as you wish.’

We often imagine God wanting to control us with fear. But God sets us free through love. God gives us the tools and the wisdom, then lets us freely make decisions that allow us to sustain balance, love, peace and equanimity in the universe, inside and out. God never imposes himself upon us because then, love that imposes ceases to be love.

This is as true today as it was then. You can read every spiritual book or scripture ever written, you can attend retreats, listen to podcasts, sit at the feet of great Gurus, or meditate in the Himalayas. Every one of these can illuminate your path and awaken your consciousness, but none of them can choose for you. The final step is always yours. The Guru can point towards the moon, but only you can decide whether you wish to look up.

Every single day, life places us on our own Kurukshetra. The battlefield is between comfort and courage, fear and faith, reaction and awareness, convenience and Dharma. Every conversation, every business decision, every relationship, every apology withheld or offered, every act of kindness or indifference becomes a quiet choice that we get to make. These are the battles that shape a life, and no one else can fight them for us.

This is why Krishna never picks up Arjuna’s bow and fights for him. He could have ended the war himself in seconds. Instead, Krishna transforms the one thing that truly needed transforming - Arjuna’s consciousness. The outer battle was never the real battle. The real battle was whether Arjuna could see clearly enough to choose wisely.

There is another beautiful truth hidden in this verse. God will not save us from our choices; he saves us through our choices by constantly expanding our awareness and inviting us to choose from love instead of fear. Grace doesn’t replace free will. In fact, every conscious decision is meeting point between human responsibility and divine guidance.

Krishna’s final gift to Arjuna is neither certainty nor instruction, but the freedom to participate consciously in one’s own becoming. God does not want obedient followers but conscious human beings. He gives us wisdom, asks us to deeply contemplate it, and then lovingly steps aside so that we may discover the dignity and joy of creating our life ourselves.

  To rewrite to story,
change yourself in the middle of a sentence.

  mark

Each of us has been witness to a moment when we are about to say something and then we just stop mid-sentence. You realise that the words you’re about to speak may not be heard the way you intend them. They may wound instead of heal. They may trigger instead of connect. So you stop.

Or we have been at the other end, when someone is speaking to us, halfway through a sentence, and then they just pause awkwardly, shake their head and say, ‘Not now.’ And almost immediately, you reply, ‘Say it. Tell me. Out with it.’

The single most transformative habit on a spiritual journey is the power to interrupt. To interrupt yourself.

To catch yourself mid-sentence is a superpower, and then to choose a different response is where the magical shift starts happening. The power to simply become aware of a pattern in real time and then repeatedly choose a new response is the cornerstone of a powerful inner journey that is then projected into the world outside.

Many of us replay conversations in our head hours after they happen. We beat ourselves up for what we said or we didn't, not knowing that we would not, or could not, have said anything different anyway, being so conditioned to our predictable reactions. We think of smart-arse answers that never came up at the right time. We think of more tongue-in-cheek replies that never came out of our mouth. We imagine ourselves in the same situation and, this time, winning the argument with a different response.

But then, the next time also turns out to be one with the same responses. The circle repeats.

Breaking the circle, catching yourself mid-pattern in real time, not in reflection, not as an afterthought, not in retrospect, not in hindsight, but in that very moment, is powerful evidence of your healing journey. This micro-interruption is what real-time growth journeys are made of.

But here’s something to ponder upon: merely interrupting yourself is one thing; choosing a different response is another. We may be able to identify the pattern, but the real magic lies in going out of your comfort zone in real time. And as you choose a new response again and again, it becomes a new habit. And new habits lead to new destinies.
